Advanced Emergency Notification Systems Installed at The New Terminal One at JFK
Safety Systems Management has installed advanced wireless emergency notification systems at The New Terminal One at JFK, enhancing worker safety during the construction phase.

Safety Systems Management (SSM) has announced the installation of 25 mobile communications towers at The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), marking a significant advancement in construction site safety. These towers, operational during the construction phase, are designed to provide immediate audio/visual alerts and mass messaging capabilities to ensure the safety and informed response of over 3,000 personnel involved in the project.
The proprietary systems, developed by SSM, represent a leap forward from traditional emergency notification methods, such as air horns, by offering seamless communication across the project during critical situations. Installed across Phase A of the project, which encompasses a 1.8-million square foot area including new arrivals and departures halls and 14 new gates, these systems will play a crucial role in managing safety-related events. These include fire outbreaks, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, structural collapses, and active shooter scenarios, as well as daily safety messages.
Joe Schwed, The New Terminal One's Head of Health, Safety, and Wellbeing, emphasized the importance of these systems, stating, "Safety Systems Management's innovative wireless emergency notification system is a game-changer for our construction site." The system's advanced features, including rapid response capabilities and the ability to broadcast urgent messages across all communication towers, set a new standard for safety in large-scale construction projects.
At the core of the system is a base station located in the medical trailer, serving as the central command center. This station enables the site safety team to control an LED sign board for instant updates and use a dedicated emergency handset for broadcasting messages. Additionally, each of the 25 communication towers is equipped with a pull pendant, allowing any worker to trigger an alert in an emergency. The system's design ensures that safety personnel are immediately notified via text when a pendant is activated, facilitating a swift investigation and potential evacuation if necessary.
The New Terminal One at JFK is part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's ambitious $19-billion transformation of the airport. Upon completion in 2030, the terminal will span 2.6-million square feet and feature 23 gates, aiming to rank among the top airport terminals globally. The installation of SSM's emergency notification systems underscores the project's commitment to worker safety and innovation in construction site management.
