AIRO Group Advances Middle-Mile Cargo Drone Development in Quebec's YMX Innovation Zone
AIRO Group's new middle-mile cargo drone aims to revolutionize freight transport with efficient, low-emission technology, marking a significant step in Advanced Air Mobility.

AIRO Group, a leader in aerospace and defense technologies, has announced the development of a new middle-mile, medium-lift cargo drone, alongside its expansion into the YMX Innovation Zone in Mirabel, Quebec. This initiative, led by its Electric Air Mobility segment, Jaunt Air Mobility, and its Canadian subsidiary, Jaunt Air Mobility Canada, signifies a pivotal move in the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector.
The cargo drone is designed to transport 250–500 lbs. over distances exceeding 200 miles, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional freight methods like box trucks and tractor-trailers. Utilizing Jaunt’s patented Slowed-Rotor Compound (SRC) technology, the drone merges the vertical takeoff capabilities of helicopters with the cruise efficiency of fixed-wing airplanes, promising enhanced safety, performance, and efficiency.
Key to the drone's development is the advancement of Command & Control (C2) capabilities, including support for cellular and satellite communications, aiming for beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operation with dual-redundant data links. This technology ensures secure, high-availability command pathways, crucial for operations in complex and remote areas.
The project benefits from AIRO's collaboration with Vertiko Mobilité and the support of Aéroports de Montréal (ADM), leveraging the YMX Innovation Zone's ecosystem for accelerated testing and validation. This strategic location facilitates a seamless transition from concept to deployment, enhancing regulatory validation and operational readiness.
Martin Peryea, SVP & GM of AIRO’s Electric Air Mobility segment, highlighted the drone's potential to transform access to critical supplies in remote communities, building on the success of the CORRIDAIR Project with Vertiko Mobilité. Captain Joe Burns, CEO of AIRO, and Dr. Chirinjeev Kathuria, Executive Chairman, emphasized the project's role in advancing AAM and creating a scalable ecosystem for both cargo and passenger services.
This development underscores AIRO's commitment to pioneering sustainable and efficient air mobility solutions, addressing the global demand for innovative logistics and infrastructure solutions.
