Alameda Health System Nursing Homes Earn National Recognition Amid Medicaid Funding Crisis

All four Alameda Health System skilled nursing and sub-acute facilities have been recognized on Newsweek's America's Best Nursing Homes 2026 list, highlighting exceptional care quality within the public safety-net health system. The recognition comes at a critical time as the organization faces substantial federal funding reductions that could jeopardize these and other essential healthcare services.

The honored facilities include Fairmont Rehabilitation and Wellness in San Leandro, along with Alameda Hospital Skilled Nursing Facilities in Alameda, comprising Park Bridge Rehabilitation and Wellness, Alameda Hospital Sub-Acute Unit, and South Shore Rehabilitation and Wellness. These facilities provide long-term care and temporary residence for patients undergoing medically necessary rehabilitation treatment as part of Alameda County's public safety-net health system.

Richard Espinoza, chief administrative officer of post-acute services at AHS, stated that the recognition affirms the system's belief that public safety-net healthcare can provide exceptional care comparable to for-profit institutions. He credited the achievement to highly skilled and compassionate team members who care for residents like family and facilities with strong, consistent processes.

However, this celebration of quality care occurs against a backdrop of significant financial challenges. Congress recently passed sweeping Medicaid cuts as part of H.R.1, known as The Big Bill, which experts project will cost AHS $100 million annually in federal funding by 2030. This reduction poses a substantial threat since approximately 80% of AHS funding comes from Medicaid and state healthcare reimbursements, known in California as Medi-Cal.

James Jackson, CEO of AHS, expressed pride in the nursing homes' excellence while sounding the alarm about the funding crisis. He emphasized that Medicaid funding has been slashed, putting critically important healthcare services at risk for community health and well-being. These funding dollars support not only skilled nursing facilities but also other essential services including trauma care, emergency services, hospital care, and primary care throughout the county.

The Newsweek recognition was developed in collaboration with Statista, the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The America's Best Nursing Homes 2026 ranking evaluates facilities across four key pillars: performance indicators including staffing, quality measures and health inspections; reputation scores from medical professionals; accreditations from TJC and CARF for meeting quality and safety standards; and resident satisfaction reflected in Google rating scores. The awards list was announced on September 24th, 2025, and can be viewed on Newsweek's website.
