Amy Sherald to Receive Human Rights Campaign's Ally for Equality Award for LGBTQ+ Advocacy in Art
Renowned artist Amy Sherald is being honored by the Human Rights Campaign for her work amplifying LGBTQ+ visibility through art, particularly her painting "Trans Forming Liberty," which reimagines Black transgender artist Arewà Basit as the Statue of Liberty.

Renowned artist and former Baltimore resident Amy Sherald will receive the Human Rights Campaign's Ally for Equality Award at its sold-out National Dinner in Washington on Saturday. The HRC, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, announced that Sherald is being honored for amplifying the existence and experiences of LGBTQ+ people in her art.
Sherald's work, best exemplified by her 2024 painting "Trans Forming Liberty" which reimagines Black transgender artist Arewà Basit as the Statue of Liberty, serves as a bold demand for visibility and a call for inclusion in the American dream. The HRC stated this is especially significant at a time of enhanced political and social antagonism toward marginalized communities.
The dinner at the Washington Hilton will bring together more than 2,000 members, leaders and advocates to raise funds and support LGBTQ+ equality across the country. Sherald's recognition highlights the growing intersection between art and social justice movements, particularly in amplifying underrepresented voices within the LGBTQ+ community.
This honor comes as Sherald's "American Sublime" exhibit is scheduled to come to the Baltimore Museum of Art, further cementing her influence in both the art world and social advocacy spheres. The award recognizes artists who use their platform to advance civil rights and promote inclusion through creative expression.
The Human Rights Campaign's National Dinner serves as a major fundraising event supporting LGBTQ+ equality initiatives nationwide. Sherald's selection for this honor underscores the importance of artistic representation in challenging societal norms and advocating for marginalized communities during times of increased political polarization.
