Arkansas Approves First State Lithium Royalty, Paving Way for Future Development

Standard Lithium Ltd., through its joint venture with Equinor, achieved a significant milestone in lithium extraction after the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission unanimously approved a 2.5% lithium royalty rate for the Reynolds Unit in the South West Arkansas Project.

The approved royalty rate represents the first state-sanctioned lithium extraction royalty from brine, potentially setting a crucial precedent for future lithium development in Arkansas. Combined with an annual brine fee of $65.05 per acre, total compensation to brine owners will approximate 3% based on current market prices.

The project aims to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually by 2028, contributing to the growing demand for lithium in electric vehicle and renewable energy battery production. This development signals potential economic opportunities for Arkansas and advances sustainable energy infrastructure.

By establishing a clear regulatory framework for lithium royalties, the approval could attract additional investment and accelerate lithium extraction projects in the region. The joint venture between Standard Lithium and Equinor demonstrates a strategic approach to developing domestic lithium resources, potentially reducing reliance on international lithium supply chains.
