Artist François Miglio Builds Sustainable Cultural Hub in Chimayó Through Personal Labor and Crowdfunding
French-born artist François Miglio is personally constructing a 2,000-square-foot education and art space in Chimayó, New Mexico, representing a decades-long journey from basement living to creating a cultural destination that bridges art, science, and community learning.

Artist François Miglio is transforming his Chimayó, New Mexico home into a 2,000-square-foot Education & Art Space through hands-on construction using sustainable materials like pumice and adobe. The French-born artist dedicates eight hours daily to building what will become the working base for the Miglio Foundation's exhibitions and educational programs, creating a cultural hub along the scenic route between Santa Fe and Taos.
Miglio's journey to this project reflects extraordinary perseverance. After moving to the United States at age forty with limited English, he spent 15 years living in a basement without windows or running water while promoting his art. His persistence eventually led to exhibitions and lectures at prestigious institutions including UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and the University of Toulouse.
The realization that his art resonated equally with erudite scholars and young children inspired Miglio to create a space where people can experience art directly. During my exhibitions and talks at universities and cultural institutions, I realized that my art could be understood and appreciated by some of the most erudite scholars—whose vast knowledge often lies beyond my own reach, Miglio says. Yet I also discovered that it speaks just as naturally to the innocence of young children, and to anyone who still possesses a sense of wonder and curiosity.
The new facility will feature a permanent gallery, rotating exhibitions, and a video room for immersive art and science experiences while providing opportunities for students and the community to learn and collaborate. To support completion of the project, Miglio has launched a crowdfunding campaign seeking $80,000 through https://gofund.me/5b42430e9. The funds will cover materials, infrastructure, and equipment for the space.
Miglio has already invested $40,000 of his personal savings into the project and committed an additional $30,000. Once completed, the building will host exhibitions, workshops, and programs exploring intersections of art, science, and philosophy. This foundation isn't just about art — it's about possibility, Miglio says. It's about showing that creativity and education have the power to transform lives, no matter where you begin.
The Chimayó space represents both a cultural destination and testament to Miglio's decades-long commitment to art, education, and sustainability. The project demonstrates how personal vision and determination can create lasting community resources that bridge artistic expression with educational opportunity.
