Balfour Communities Trains Louisville First Responders in Dementia Care Techniques

Balfour Cherrywood Village Memory Care, a Kisco Collection community, recently conducted a comprehensive dementia training series for the Louisville Fire and EMS Department. This collaborative initiative, developed in partnership with Balfour Louisville and Balfour Longmont, aimed to equip first responders with enhanced skills for effectively engaging with individuals experiencing dementia during emergency situations.

Elizabeth Chase, a Louisville firefighter-paramedic, noted the immediate impact of the training, stating that staff demonstrated deep compassion while providing simple yet effective interaction techniques. The program featured a presentation focusing on appropriate approaches, communication methods, and assistance strategies for dementia patients, incorporating real-life scenarios and proven methodologies through highly conversational and hands-on exercises.

A key component of the training involved the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT), an immersive and scientifically developed simulation that replicates the sensory and cognitive changes associated with dementia. This experiential learning approach, detailed at https://www.virtualdementiatour.com, allowed first responders to gain firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with cognitive impairments.

Shawn Stark, chief of EMS, expressed gratitude for the community partnership, emphasizing that crews developed better understanding and empathy through the engaging and interactive sessions. The training highlighted Balfour staff's evident devotion and advocacy for senior community residents, creating a unique collaborative model that distinguishes these communities in emergency preparedness.

Brenda Gurung, national director of memory care services at Kisco Senior Living, described the training as an honor and investment in supporting vulnerable adults. The sessions facilitated meaningful conversations and shared insights about supporting individuals on their dementia journey, fostering lasting appreciation between the organizations.

The training aligns with Kisco's trademarked Heirloom Memory Care program, which is grounded in human-centered research, empathy, and connection. All Balfour Communities associates are required to complete the Virtual Dementia Tour training, reinforcing the program's commitment to enhancing care through deepened understanding and practical tools for supporting residents and families. This ongoing partnership represents a significant advancement in community-based emergency response training for specialized populations.
