Bennelong Funds Management Partners with Monroe Capital to Expand Private Credit Access in Australia and New Zealand

Bennelong Funds Management has signed a memorandum of understanding and partnered with US-based Monroe Capital to expand distribution of private credit solutions to Australia and New Zealand. The partnership represents Bennelong's strategic shift from an equities-focused business to one that caters to evolving investor needs across all established asset classes.

Monroe Capital, a $21.6 billion asset manager specializing in diversified private credit solutions, brings proven expertise in US lower middle market direct lending to institutional and high-net-worth investors. The firm's investment strategy focuses primarily on first lien and unitranche loans to companies diversified across multiple industries throughout the US and Canada. Gillian Larkins, Chair of the Bennelong Funds Management Ltd Board, stated that this alignment represents the third step in transforming Bennelong's business model to better serve investor requirements.

John Burke, CEO of Bennelong Funds Management, emphasized Monroe Capital's position as a top ten US non-bank lender in 2024, noting their specialist international management capabilities and scale. The partnership will offer local investors valuable private credit alternatives through Bennelong's Australian-domiciled fund. Alex Kim, Managing Director & Head of APAC at Monroe Capital, highlighted the attractive characteristics of the US middle market lending universe, which includes over 200,000 companies and features less competition, more covenants, and higher spreads than other direct lending areas.

The fragmentation in the lower middle market, where Monroe Capital specializes, provides investors access to market segments with potential for higher returns and enhanced downside protection. Zia Uddin, President of Monroe Capital, described the launch as a pivotal step in democratizing access to institutional-grade credit strategies, opening doors for qualifying investors to participate in a resilient asset class that has historically delivered stable income. Monroe Capital maintains 12 locations throughout the United States, Asia, Middle East and Australia, with over 300 employees including approximately 120 investment professionals focused on deal sourcing and underwriting. Bennelong plans to launch a local registered vehicle in the coming months, further solidifying the partnership's operational framework. The collaboration leverages Monroe Capital's extensive experience and recognition within the industry, including awards such as Private Debt Investor's 2024 Lower Mid-Market Lender of the Year and 2023 Lower Mid-Market Lender of the Decade. This strategic partnership addresses growing investor demand for alternative credit solutions while providing access to specialized US market opportunities previously unavailable to many Australian and New Zealand investors.
