Boca Raton Historical Society Launches Multi-Year America250 Initiative with Lecture Series and Exhibit
The Boca Raton Historical Society and Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum are launching a comprehensive educational program through 2026 to commemorate America's 250th anniversary, featuring expert-led town hall talks and an exhibit exploring Florida's revolutionary-era history.

The Boca Raton Historical Society and Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum have initiated a multi-year educational program commemorating the national America250 initiative, running through 2026. The program aims to provide fresh perspectives on American history through a series of town hall talks and a major exhibition focused on Florida's role during the revolutionary period.
Executive Director Mary Csar emphasized the initiative's purpose, stating it invites Americans to reflect on the nation's founding and the diverse individuals who shaped its development. The program seeks to spark dialogue through compelling narratives and often-overlooked historical viewpoints as the country approaches its semiquincentennial milestone.
The fall lecture series, led by historian and reenactor Robert Feeney, will examine the lived experiences of those involved in the American Revolution from multiple perspectives. The three-part series includes "The Redcoats Are Coming" on September 10, 2025, exploring British soldiers' training and mindset; "Continental Soldiers: Washington's Army in the Revolution" on October 8, 2025, detailing the challenges faced by American fighters; and "Medicine and Surgery During the Revolutionary War" on November 12, 2025, examining 18th-century medical practices. Limited seating requires RSVP through www.bocahistory.org.
Additional programming continues through spring 2026 with scholars including Dr. Robert Watson of Lynn University discussing the Declaration of Independence on February 18, 2026, and Dr. Jason Sharples of Florida Atlantic University providing a strategic overview of the revolution on April 8, 2026. Roger Smith will present multiple sessions on espionage, women's roles, and historical misconceptions throughout May 2026.
The centerpiece exhibition, "America 250: The 14th Colony," will run from May 13 through August 27, 2026, exploring Florida's pre-statehood history through cultural conflicts, freedom seekers, and pioneering figures. The exhibit will feature reproductions of important Documents of Liberty from Florida Atlantic University's Spirit of America Collection, offering visitors insight into Florida's complex historical narrative during the revolutionary era.
This comprehensive initiative represents a significant educational investment in public historical understanding, providing scholarly perspectives on both well-known and overlooked aspects of America's founding while emphasizing Florida's unique historical contributions to the nation's development.
