Brown Paindiris & Scott (BPS Lawyers), a Glastonbury-based law firm, has announced a partnership with UConn Athletics to serve as the program's full-service legal partner. The collaboration comes at a critical time as NCAA policies undergo significant changes affecting student-athletes' academic and athletic trajectories.

The partnership will provide UConn Athletics with comprehensive legal services including compliance support, contract reviews, and general counsel services. Recent NCAA reforms have eliminated restrictions on the number of times academically eligible student-athletes can transfer during their college careers, allowing athletes to transfer multiple times without losing eligibility provided they maintain good academic standing and meet progress-toward-degree requirements at their new institution.

Additionally, NCAA reforms have granted student-athletes greater autonomy over their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), permitting them to engage in commercial activities without jeopardizing their eligibility. These policy shifts offer greater flexibility but introduce complications regarding credit transfer, eligibility, and academic progression that require specialized legal expertise.

Firm Partner Nick Paindiris, a UConn graduate, stated that the partnership will allow the firm to help the program navigate legal matters and establish protections reflecting the needs of future generations. The collaboration may also create opportunities for student-athletes to consider pre-law pathways, scholarships, and mentorship programs through the nationally recognized UConn School of Law program.

Ian Butler, another Partner at the firm, emphasized that the discipline required for athletic success translates well to the legal field, noting that undergraduate programs developing critical thinking, research, and communication skills provide excellent pre-law foundations. Multiple attorneys at BPS Lawyers are UConn graduates, creating natural alignment with the university's athletic programs and academic mission.
