Broadway Theaters and Community Rally Against Proposed Times Square Casino

The Broadway theater community, alongside residents and local non-profit organizations, is taking a stand against the proposed Times Square casino by developer SL Green. A rally is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13, at 9am, coinciding with the first public hearing of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Times Square casino proposal. The opposition is backed by a recent Tulchin Research poll showing 71 percent of Midtown residents against the casino, citing potential harm to Broadway's economic activity, exploitation of vulnerable populations, and quality of life issues.

In a show of solidarity, marquees at 16 Broadway theaters, including the Majestic and the St. James, will display a "No Times Square Casino" message during peak hours. This visual protest aims to draw public attention and encourage community members to voice their concerns to local elected officials. The coalition against the casino has grown to include 35 organizations, ranging from Broadway unions like IATSE to social service providers and resident groups, underscoring the widespread opposition to the project.

The rally and marquee lighting occur as the CAC holds its first public hearing, offering a platform for the community's voice to be heard. The location of the hearing is Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue, Manhattan. Participants include a diverse group of residents, Broadway union members, and coalition supporters, all united in their opposition to the casino proposal. The coalition argues that the casino is out of step with the neighborhood's resurgence, especially following Broadway's record-breaking season post-pandemic.

This movement reflects broader concerns about the implications of introducing a casino into Times Square, with opponents highlighting the potential for increased gambling addiction, crime, and a negative impact on the area's cultural and economic vitality. The coalition's efforts underscore a collective commitment to preserving the character and well-being of Times Square and its surrounding communities.
