Cambrian and Anheuser-Busch Recognized for Innovative Water Reuse Project at Global Water Awards

Cambrian, a water reuse technology company, and Anheuser-Busch have been honored with a Global Water Award Distinction for their innovative industrial water treatment project. The collaboration showcases a transformative approach to water management that simultaneously addresses environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.

The project centers on Cambrian's BlueCycle™ membrane bioreactor system at Anheuser-Busch's Houston brewery, which treats over 400,000 gallons of high-strength wastewater daily. The advanced treatment process produces water of drinking water quality, which is then reused onsite for non-potable purposes, significantly reducing freshwater consumption.

Key project metrics highlight its substantial environmental impact. Over a 20-year contract, the system is projected to treat 3.45 billion gallons of water, lower water and wastewater costs by 20%, and prevent more than 23,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

What sets this project apart is Cambrian's Water-Energy Purchase Agreement (WEPA) model, which required no upfront capital investment from Anheuser-Busch. Cambrian financed, constructed, and now operates the system, charging only for water treated. Embedded Cambrian personnel manage operations, removing maintenance responsibilities from the brewery's team.

The collaboration originated through Anheuser-Busch InBev's 100+ Accelerator sustainability innovation platform and represents the first full-scale deployment of Cambrian's WEPA model in the beverage industry. The project signals a growing trend toward outcomes-based infrastructure that intrinsically links environmental performance with economic value.

The Global Water Intelligence Global Water Awards recognized the project for its technical excellence, sustainability leadership, and potential scalability in addressing industrial water challenges. This distinction underscores the potential for innovative water management solutions to drive meaningful environmental and economic progress.
