Comcast and Minneapolis Public Housing Authority Partner to Expand Digital Access
A new partnership between Comcast and the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority aims to provide high-speed WiFi in public housing units, offering residents quick and easy internet connectivity to support education, healthcare, and community engagement.
Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) residents will soon experience dramatically improved internet access through a strategic partnership with Comcast. The collaboration will equip residential units with pre-installed Xfinity WiFi, enabling rapid internet connection for low-income households.
The initiative addresses a critical digital equity challenge by providing residents instant network access. When moving into a WiFi-ready unit, residents can connect to the internet within five minutes, eliminating traditional installation barriers such as scheduling technician visits or purchasing equipment.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized the broader significance of the project, stating that the partnership is about creating opportunities beyond mere technological connectivity. MPHA Executive Director Abdi Warsame reinforced this perspective, describing internet access as a core necessity for accessing healthcare, educational services, and maintaining community connections.
Comcast's regional senior vice president Kalyn Hove characterized the project as a transformative step toward ensuring digital opportunity. The network installation will occur in phases, with the first three buildings already completed and plans to expand WiFi connectivity to additional buildings by the end of 2026.
