The Decatur Downtown Development Authority has announced a comprehensive holiday initiative featuring weekly events and shopping promotions aimed at supporting local businesses and building community spirit throughout the season. The program includes weekly "Terrific Thursday" events running from November through December, each offering unique activities developed through collaboration between the DDA, community groups, and local businesses.

The "Terrific Thursday" schedule begins November 6 with an official city ornament unveiling at Vivid Boutique, followed by early bird shopping photos with Santa on November 13 throughout Downtown Decatur. Subsequent weeks feature pet photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus at Harmony Park in Oakhurst on November 20, the annual tree lighting with caroling and refreshments at the Historic DeKalb Courthouse on December 4, a bonfire and marshmallow roast with caroling from The Talley Street Chorus on December 11, and concludes with Screen on the Green featuring "Happy Feet" and free popcorn at Ebster Recreation Center on December 18.

Conor McNally, chair of the Decatur Downtown Development Authority, emphasized the community-focused nature of the programming. "We are excited to welcome locals and visitors alike to Downtown Decatur this holiday season, as our team has worked hard to ensure we truly have something for everyone," McNally stated. He noted that beyond the scheduled events, new restaurants have opened and existing retailers have made substantial investments to enhance the guest experience.

Additional holiday promotions include a "Shop Early, Shop Local" initiative offering a $20 restaurant gift card for every $200 spent at local retailers during November. A "Gingerbread Takeover" will feature local shops decorating giant cookie cutouts with festive designs. Letters to Santa can be dropped off at three locations: the Decatur Visitors Center, Kelly's Market, and Oakhurst Market, with some potentially receiving responses.

Small Business Saturday on November 29 will include photos with Santa on The Square, free milk and cookies, and complimentary gift wrapping services. A menorah lighting ceremony celebrating the first night of Hanukkah will take place on The Square on December 14 at 4:30 p.m., featuring free hot drinks and latkes.

The holiday activities occur against the backdrop of the $8.5 million renovation of Decatur Square, which began construction in spring and targets an April 2026 reopening. The reimagined Square will serve as the central hub for Decatur WatchFest '26, a 34-day free soccer and music festival coinciding with FIFA World Cup 2026. The festival kicks off June 11 with a concert featuring Big Boi of Outkast and will provide numerous opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy matches at local establishments. Additional details about the Square renovation are available at SquareShakeUp.com.

This comprehensive holiday programming represents a strategic effort to strengthen local economic activity during the critical retail season while fostering community connections through shared experiences. The coordinated approach between municipal authorities, business owners, and community organizations demonstrates a model for sustainable local economic development that balances commercial interests with quality-of-life enhancements for residents and visitors alike.
