DPR Construction Completes Structural Phase for Memorial Healthcare's New Pembroke Pines Emergency Department

DPR Construction's South Florida Business Unit has completed the structural steel topping out phase for Memorial Healthcare System's new free-standing emergency department at 801 S. Douglas Road in Pembroke Pines. The 30,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to be fully operational by May 2026, will replace the current 24/7 Care Center and significantly expand emergency medical services capacity in the region.

The new facility will feature 20 exam and treatment rooms, a dedicated pediatric treatment area, 16 fast-track exam rooms, comprehensive diagnostic imaging including x-ray and CT capabilities, and a full-service laboratory to support all diagnostic procedures. According to Shane Strum, Memorial Healthcare System's interim CEO, "This facility is projected to care for approximately 55,000 individuals each year, with room for future growth. Designed to staff adult emergency medical as well as pediatric emergency medical physicians, it is equipped to meet diverse emergency needs."

The construction project, managed by DPR Construction, one of the nation's top technical builders, has involved innovative approaches to overcome the challenges of working on an active medical campus. Lee Kinzel, a senior project manager at DPR, noted that "the challenges of a multi-phase project on an active campus have enabled the DPR team to incorporate cutting edge Lean construction processes. By applying these techniques, we've been able to maintain momentum and properly plan the job."

Infrastructure improvements accompanying the project include a newly completed parking lot, with plans to demolish the existing urgent care building once the new facility becomes operational and replace it with additional parking. DPR is simultaneously constructing another free-standing emergency department for Memorial Healthcare System in Miramar at Miramar Parkway and Red Road, also scheduled to open in 2026.
