Emvolon and Montauk Renewables Forge Joint Venture to Transform Biogas into Green Methanol

Emvolon, an MIT spin-off specializing in converting greenhouse gas emissions into carbon-negative fuels, and Montauk Renewables, Inc., a leader in biogas management and conversion, have announced a joint venture aimed at developing multiple biogas-to-green methanol projects. This collaboration is set to begin with the Atascocita Humble Renewable Energy facility in Texas, which will utilize Emvolon's technology to convert flared gas into green methanol, producing up to 6,000 metric tons annually.

The partnership represents a pivotal expansion in the use of biogas, moving beyond traditional applications like renewable natural gas and power generation. By leveraging Emvolon's patented technology, which repurposes car engines as modular chemical plants, the venture aims to address the growing demand for green methanol. This demand is partly driven by new net-zero regulations from the International Maritime Organization, targeting ships that contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Sean McClain, President and CEO of Montauk, highlighted the venture's potential to explore new uses for biogas, including waste streams from existing facilities. Dr. Emmanuel Kasseris, CEO of Emvolon, emphasized the technology's ability to transform methane emissions into sustainable, revenue-generating resources, crucial for sectors like shipping, aviation, and chemical manufacturing.

The global market for green methanol is expected to reach up to 14 million metric tons by 2030, according to the Methanol Institute. This joint venture not only aims to tap into this growing market but also to monetize previously wasted methane emissions, offering a sustainable solution that requires no new greenhouse gas emissions, expensive pipeline infrastructure, or government subsidies.
