eyeo Raises €40 Million to Commercialize Color-Splitting Sensor Technology That Eliminates 70% Light Loss

eyeo, a Dutch imaging technology company, announced today that it has raised €40 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to €55 million. The round is led by Innovation Industries, with participation from existing investors imec.xpand, Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund, QBIC fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Brabant Development Agency (BOM).

The funding will accelerate eyeo's efforts to bring its nanophotonic color-splitting technology to market, which the company says overcomes a fundamental flaw in conventional camera sensors. According to eyeo, traditional color filter technology causes every camera to lose 70% of incoming light, a problem that has persisted for decades. eyeo's sensors instead guide photons directly to individual pixels, capturing all incoming light and enabling native color fidelity in any lighting condition.

This breakthrough has significant implications for the $30 billion imaging market. eyeo's sensors capture three times more light than existing sensors, which could dramatically improve low-light photography in smartphones, enhance performance in extended reality (XR) devices, and enable more reliable surveillance and monitoring in smart city infrastructure. The technology is compatible with any CMOS sensor platform and supports sub-0.5-micron pixels, allowing for ultra-compact, high-performance imaging.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Innovation Industries and our existing investors as we move from seven years of proven nanophotonic science to production-ready sensors,” said a spokesperson for eyeo. “Our technology represents a paradigm shift in imaging, and this funding will allow us to scale manufacturing and bring our sensors to market.”

The announcement comes as demand for high-quality imaging continues to grow across multiple sectors. Smartphone manufacturers are constantly seeking ways to improve camera performance without increasing sensor size, while XR headsets require compact, low-power sensors that can deliver high-fidelity images. Smart city applications, such as traffic monitoring and public safety, also stand to benefit from sensors that can capture clear images in challenging lighting conditions.

eyeo is headquartered at High Tech Campus Eindhoven in the Netherlands, with a sensor design center in Antwerp, Belgium. The company's technology builds on advances in nanophotonics, which manipulates light at the nanoscale to achieve effects not possible with conventional optics.
