Former Chesapeake Football Star Opens D1 Training Facility, Expanding Athletic Development in Local Community
Marvin Brown, a former Hickory High School football star and James Madison University national champion, has opened a D1 Training facility in East Chesapeake, bringing professional athletic training to the community through a franchise model backed by sports science and experienced leadership.

Marvin Brown, a former Chesapeake football standout, has launched D1 Training East Chesapeake at 1011 Eden Way North, marking a significant expansion of the athletic development franchise in the region. The facility opened on July 14 and employs certified trainers implementing sports-science backed regimens designed to serve people of all ages and athletic backgrounds.
Brown brings substantial athletic credentials to his new venture, having played tight end at James Madison University from 2003 to 2008 as part of the 2004 national championship team. His upcoming induction into JMU's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024 underscores his deep connection to competitive sports. The Brown family's athletic legacy extends beyond Marvin, with his father having played professional baseball for the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres, his sister Bonita being a multi-sport Hall of Famer, and his twin brothers Donnell and Ronnell both having football careers that included professional stints.
After a 15-year career in healthcare leadership, Brown transitioned to pursue his passion for athletics and family. He partners with his brother Donnell Brown, head football coach at Hickory High School, and longtime friend Leland Cleland, a former Hickory High teammate. Together they will operate under the unified brand 'D1 Chesapeake,' with Cleland planning to open a second location in West Chesapeake in late 2025 or early 2026.
D1 Training distinguishes itself through its five core athletic-based training tenets: dynamic warm-up, performance, strength program, core and conditioning, and cool down. The facility offers four age-based programs including Rookie (ages 7-11), Developmental (ages 12-14), Prep (ages 15-18) and D1 Adult, along with group, semi-private, and one-on-one training options. Brown emphasized that D1 Chesapeake aims to be known as 'the Home of the Athlete' where individuals can develop physically, mentally, and spiritually.
The expansion represents part of D1 Training's national growth strategy, with the brand operating more than 150 facilities nationwide and over 100 additional locations in development. According to the brand's Chief Operating Officer Dan Murphy, 'The Browns and Clelland are the ideal candidates to bring the D1 Training experience to Chesapeake. We're confident in their ability to show the East Chesapeake area what they've been missing out on.' The franchise continues seeking qualified business builders, former athletes, and entrepreneurs who share a passion for fitness and youth sports.
