Former Prosecutor Gretchen Taylor Pousson Leads Scrofano Law's Virginia Criminal Defense Practice
Gretchen Taylor Pousson brings over 30 years of dual perspective as both prosecutor and defense attorney to head Scrofano Law PC's Virginia criminal defense practice, highlighting the importance of balanced justice and redemption in the legal system.

Scrofano Law PC has appointed Gretchen Taylor Pousson as head of its Virginia Criminal Defense Practice, bringing over three decades of trial experience and the unique perspective of having worked on both sides of the criminal justice system. Based in Fairfax, Virginia, Attorney Pousson represents clients in state and federal courts across Northern Virginia, offering what colleagues describe as powerful, compassionate advocacy for individuals facing criminal charges.
Pousson's legal career began as an Assistant Public Defender in Roanoke, Virginia, where she tried her first murder case just six months after passing the bar. Her subsequent five years as a prosecutor in Newport News provided critical insight into prosecution strategies and priorities, giving her what she describes in Super Lawyers Magazine as a balanced understanding of justice. "Sometimes justice means you let someone go or you give them a chance for redemption," she told the publication, emphasizing her philosophy that extends beyond mere legal technicalities.
Her comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system further developed during seven years as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Eastern District of Virginia, where she handled some of the region's most serious federal cases and earned a reputation as a fearless, ethical advocate. This foundation led her to establish her own practice, Taylor Law Company, in 2008, which she incorporated in 2011 before joining Scrofano Law PC in August 2023 to establish and oversee the firm's Fairfax office.
Joseph A. Scrofano, founder and principal attorney of the firm, emphasized the significance of Pousson's appointment, stating that she "embodies everything we value at Scrofano Law—relentless advocacy, compassion, and a deep belief in redemption." Her leadership in Virginia strengthens the firm's commitment to defending the rights of the accused with both skill and integrity, according to the firm's announcement.
Beyond her courtroom work, Pousson has presented on criminal law and trial advocacy before national defense organizations and maintains recognition as both a Super Lawyer and AVVO Top Attorney. As a Founding Member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association, her case experience spans from DUI and theft to serious felony and homicide charges, including unique animal defense matters where she successfully exonerated dogs wrongfully labeled as dangerous. Former clients describe her as "honorable, ethical, and kind," with one noting she "drastically altered the course of my life simply by doing her job."
