Garnes Society and BRAVE Coalition Unite to Endow Lecture Promoting Diversity in Plastic Surgery

The Arthur L. Garnes Society and the BRAVE Coalition have joined forces to establish an endowment for the Ferdinand Ofodile Lecture, a critical platform dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusive excellence in plastic and reconstructive surgery. The organizations aim to raise $100,000 to support ongoing speaker fees, travel expenses, and program development for future lectures.

The lecture honors Dr. Ferdinand Ofodile, a renowned clinical professor from Columbia University and former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Harlem Hospital, which historically hosted the nation's first plastic surgery training program at a predominantly Black hospital. Dr. Ofodile was a protégé of Dr. Arthur L. Garnes, the namesake of the sponsoring organization.

Dr. Paris Butler, a founding member of The Garnes Society, emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that BRAVE's commitment to patient advocacy aligns perfectly with their mission to create a more equitable surgical environment. Dr. Christien Grogan, BRAVE Coalition's founder, highlighted the initiative's potential to foster a more inclusive and representative plastic surgery community.

This collaborative effort represents a significant step toward addressing representation and diversity challenges within medical specialties. By establishing a permanent lecture series, the organizations aim to create ongoing dialogue about inclusivity, mentorship, and opportunities for underrepresented professionals in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The initiative serves as a model for other medical disciplines seeking to promote diversity and create pathways for meaningful professional development and representation. By honoring Dr. Ofodile's legacy, the lecture will continue to inspire future generations of surgeons from diverse backgrounds.
