Gold Traders Cautious as Inflation Data and Geopolitical Tensions Send Mixed Signals
Gold prices remain range-bound as sticky inflation data and geopolitical tensions in the Gulf create conflicting pressures on the precious metal.

Gold prices traded in a tight range during Friday's Asian session, with bulls hesitant to take large positions amid mixed fundamental signals. The precious metal hovered between $4,640 and $4,650 as traders grappled with sticky inflation data and the risk to economic growth from elevated oil prices.
On the bullish side, geopolitical tensions in the Gulf showed no signs of easing after President Trump sustained the Iranian port blockade to pressure Tehran on its nuclear program. Reports also indicated that the U.S. president would be briefed on possible additional strikes on Iran, further supporting gold's safe-haven appeal. Additionally, the Federal Reserve's latest FOMC meeting ended with an 8-4 vote to hold interest rates steady, marking the highest level of dissent in more than three decades. This suggested the hawkish stance may not last, with potential rate cuts ahead—a positive for non-yielding bullion.
However, these factors were offset by headwinds. The rhetoric surrounding the Gulf conflict boosted the U.S. dollar's appeal as a reserve currency, causing the greenback to appreciate. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for holders of other currencies, capping upside potential. U.S. economic data added to the uncertainty: the PCE index rose 0.7% month-on-month in March and 3.5% year-on-year, accelerating from February's 2.8% annual increase. While the economy expanded at an annualized 2% in Q1 2026, this followed a 0.5% expansion in Q4 2025, sending mixed signals about growth.
These conflicting forces have made it difficult for gold traders to take definitive positions, contributing to the range-bound trading observed as the week ended. Market participants, including Collective Mining Ltd.
