Government of Japan Honors Two Individuals for Strengthening Japan-Florida Ties
The Government of Japan has awarded prestigious decorations to Richard Del Vecchio and Ernest Aguiar for their significant contributions to fostering Japan-Florida relations through cultural exchange and diplomatic service.

The Government of Japan recently honored Richard Del Vecchio, President of the Miami Friends of the Japanese Garden, and Ernest Aguiar, a former employee of the Consulate General of Japan in Miami, with prestigious decorations for their contributions to strengthening the relationship between Japan and Florida. Del Vecchio received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, while Aguiar was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays, in recognition of their efforts in promoting cultural exchange and supporting diplomatic relations.
Del Vecchio's involvement with the Japanese community in Miami began in 2005, leading to significant contributions such as organizing the "Kagoshima Miami Day" and expanding cultural festivals through the Miami Friends of the Japanese Garden. His work has deepened local understanding of Japanese culture and fostered lasting ties between Japan and South Florida.
Aguiar dedicated over 26 years to the Consulate General of Japan in Miami, serving as a Senior Political Analyst and playing a crucial role in analyzing and coordinating projects related to U.S. and Latin American political and economic affairs. His expertise and dedication were previously recognized with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Long-Service award.
The conferment ceremony, held at the Consul General’s Official Residence, was attended by families, friends, and members of the local community, highlighting the importance of these awards in acknowledging the recipients' contributions to Japan-Florida relations. The Government of Japan expressed its appreciation for their service and the enduring impact of their work on bilateral ties.
