Handel's Ice Cream Opens 12th San Diego Location in Carmel Mountain Ranch

Handel's Ice Cream, recognized by National Geographic as the #1 ice cream in the world, continues its Southern California expansion with a new location in Carmel Mountain Plaza at 11134 Rancho Carmel Drive. The shop will celebrate its grand opening on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, featuring giveaways and exclusive gifts for early visitors.

The new outlet is the 12th location for a partnership group led by Keith and Shirlyn Kesler, Travis and Tarah Campbell, and Tammi Weenig. Keith Kesler, a former corporate executive of 30 years, transitioned to this venture to focus on building a business centered on joy and local connection. "After three decades in corporate America, I wanted to lead a venture that was purely about happiness," Kesler said.

The 1,600-square-foot walk-up shop features eight service windows to ensure efficient service during peak hours. It will offer 48 rotating flavors made fresh daily, along with pickup and delivery options through DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Postmates. Catering services are also available. The shop will be open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

This expansion underscores the growing demand for premium, locally-focused food experiences in San Diego. The partners have been active in the area through fundraising and catering events, and the new location aims to deepen those community ties. "We didn't want just any ice cream shop—we aimed to bring the 'World's Best Ice Cream' to our community," Kesler added.

Handel's Ice Cream has a history dating back to 1945, founded by Alice Handel in Youngstown, Ohio. The brand was later acquired by Lenny Fisher and has since grown to over 175 locations across 20 states. The company prides itself on using abundant ingredients and making ice cream by hand in small batches at each location. In addition to the 48 daily flavors, more than 140 seasonal flavors rotate throughout the year.
