The DFW Car & Toy Museum has acquired a 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300SD for the Ron Sturgeon Collection, marking the inclusion of a vehicle that pioneered turbocharged diesel technology in luxury sedans. This Astral Silver Metallic model represents Mercedes-Benz's breakthrough in combining executive comfort with diesel efficiency, challenging conventional perceptions that diesel engines were suited only for commercial vehicles.

The 300SD featured the 3.0-liter OM617A turbo diesel inline-five engine, producing 110 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque through a four-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain became renowned for its durability, with the museum's example having accumulated over 212,000 miles. The vehicle's engineering demonstrated that diesel power could deliver both reliability and refinement, influencing subsequent luxury diesel offerings across the automotive industry.

This particular 300SD includes European-spec modifications such as quad headlights and streamlined bumpers, along with functional upgrades like Bilstein shock absorbers and power-assisted disc brakes. Interior features maintain the car's original luxury appeal, with a Becker Grand Prix stereo, automatic climate control, and power accessories. The museum's founder, Ron Sturgeon, noted that the 300SD proved diesel could be elegant and efficient, representing a significant chapter in Mercedes-Benz's history.

The vehicle joins more than 200 rare cars and 3,000 vintage toys at the museum, which operates from its North Fort Worth location at 2550 McMillan Parkway. Visitors can view the collection Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with additional information available through the museum's website at https://dfwcarandtoymuseum.com. The 300SD's display provides automotive enthusiasts with insight into the technological transition that made diesel engines viable for premium vehicles, highlighting Mercedes-Benz's role in advancing automotive engineering during the late 1970s.
