Hollywood Celebrates Centennial with Hometown Screening of Award-Winning Film 'Canvas'

The Hollywood Historical Society, with support from the City of Hollywood, will mark the city's 100th anniversary with a special hometown screening of 'Canvas,' the award-winning film created by Hollywood native and Hollywood Hills High School graduate Joseph Greco. The free community event takes place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 7:30 PM at Hollywood Cinema Paradiso, 2008 Hollywood Blvd, providing residents with an opportunity to experience the beloved film on the big screen in the very city where it was produced.

Inspired by Greco's own childhood experiences, 'Canvas' was filmed extensively in and around Hollywood, Florida, capturing the city's distinctive charm and character throughout the movie. From vibrant neighborhoods to familiar streets and local landmarks, numerous scenes throughout the film will resonate deeply with residents who will recognize elements of their hometown woven into the film's heartfelt narrative about love, loss, and resilience in the face of mental illness.

'Bringing Canvas back to Hollywood, where it all began, is deeply meaningful to me,' Greco stated. 'This city shaped who I am as a person and a filmmaker, and I'm honored to share this film — and this milestone moment — with the community that inspired it.' The film features acclaimed performances from Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, Joe Pantoliano, and Devon Gearhart, earning significant critical recognition on the festival circuit.

'Canvas' received numerous honors, including awards at the prestigious Rome Film Festival and Roger Ebert's own Ebertfest, along with multiple audience choice awards for its moving portrayal of family dynamics and mental health challenges. While the film is currently available for streaming on Apple TV, this screening represents a rare opportunity to experience the cinematic work in its intended format, surrounded by the community and locations that served as its inspiration.

Following the screening, attendees are invited to remain for a special panel discussion and question-and-answer session with Greco and several members of the original production crew who also call Hollywood home, including Elaine Kooser and Brian Moon. The conversation will provide behind-the-scenes insights into the film's production, which notably took place during Hurricane Wilma, and explore what it meant to bring this powerful story to life in their hometown environment.

'We are thrilled to welcome Joseph Greco home and celebrate both his artistic achievements and the City's 100th anniversary,' said Andy Ruffner, Executive Director of Hollywood Historical Society. 'Canvas showcases the beauty, heart, and character of Hollywood, and we know residents will take pride in seeing our city reflected on the big screen.' The event represents a significant cultural moment for the community, blending artistic celebration with historical commemoration during the city's centennial year.
