Hong Kong and Kazakhstan Deepen Ties with Alatau City Investment Roundtable

The momentum of economic cooperation between Hong Kong and Central Asia continued as the Alatau City Investment Roundtable was held in Hong Kong on June 11, 2026, just days after a high-level business delegation returned from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The event, organized by the Alatau City Authority, a state body of Kazakhstan, brought together government officials, business leaders, and investors to explore opportunities in the new greenfield project near Almaty.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev attended the roundtable, which focused on sectors such as fintech, the low-altitude economy, smart city development, and infrastructure. Lee emphasized Hong Kong’s unique position under the 'one country, two systems' principle, calling it 'the only world city to combine the China advantage and the global advantage.' He noted Kazakhstan's ambitious reforms and open attitude toward international partners.

The roundtable built on the outcomes of the Central Asia visit from June 1-5, led by Lee and organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). During that visit, a total of 96 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements were signed, including 66 by the business delegation covering trade, investment, finance, technology, and aviation. Additionally, 15 government-level cooperation agreements and 15 MoUs in academia and culture were finalized.

One key development from the roundtable was the signing of an MoU between Templewater Limited, a delegate from the Central Asia mission, and DASCO Capital to explore establishing a fund supporting Kazakhstan’s development and the Alatau City Project. Silas Chu, Director of Exhibitions and Digital Business of HKTDC, highlighted the council’s role in promoting Hong Kong as an international business platform, noting its Almaty consultant office opened in 2018. He pointed to events like the Belt and Road Summit and InnoEX as platforms to attract international investors.

The Alatau City project represents a significant opportunity for Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese enterprises to participate in Kazakhstan’s development. The roundtable underscored the strengthening ties between Hong Kong and Central Asia, with implications for Belt and Road collaboration. The HKTDC plans to follow up on key projects by providing business matching and support services to facilitate implementation.

This event signals sustained cooperation and investment flows between Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and Central Asian markets, leveraging Hong Kong’s role as a gateway for global business. For more details, see the photo download at https://bit.ly/3RX4Odi.
