Hong Kong Twin Lighting Fairs Spotlight Smart, Sustainable Innovation as Global Market Grows

The 3rd Smart Lighting Expo and 17th Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition), organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), opened on April 20 for a four-day run at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Under the theme "Go Smart, Live Green," the twin fairs feature around 900 exhibitors, including new participants from the Netherlands and Vietnam, and introduce the debut "Light Lab" zone focusing on innovative, sustainable lighting solutions.

The event's significance is underscored by global market projections. According to Statista, the global smart lighting market is expected to reach US$44 billion by 2030. An International Energy Agency analysis from March indicates a second wave of LED transformation is imminent, with regions like Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia Pacific having relatively low LED penetration. Approximately 30% of residential lighting fixtures worldwide remain unupgraded, while early-generation LED products, accounting for nearly 15% of global residential fixtures, are nearing their 10- to 15-year lifespans, creating substantial opportunities for high-efficiency, intelligent systems.

Jenny Koo, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, noted the fairs' role in promoting Hong Kong as an international innovation hub and supporting the mega-event economy through cross-industry collaboration. As part of Business of Innovation and Technology Week (BIT Week), the Smart Lighting Expo features a newly launched Smart Commercial Display & Stage Audio-Visual Zone. Industry leaders like Absen, a top LED display exporter, and Shanghai Sansi, supplying over 60% of screens in New York's Times Square, are among the participants.

The newly introduced "Light Lab" in Hall 3 presents three immersive, scenario-based designs. The Lumin Garden displays garden lighting and solar luminaires, while Shanghai Sansi LED Lighting showcases plant lighting with proprietary ceramic technology for superior heat dissipation. The Lumin Arena features professional-grade lighting like stadium lights, including Foshan Electrical and Lighting's F Series stadium lights, which are 20% to 45% lighter than traditional fixtures and have a lifespan up to 100,000 hours. The Lumin Gallery focuses on high-end museum lighting with modular track lights and spotlights.

Exhibitors and pavilions highlight four major lighting trends shaping the market. Smart lighting enhances flexibility through technology, with products like BWEETECH's award-winning Bwee Smart Control Knob, supporting integration with platforms such as Apple Home. Green lighting drives low-carbon transformation, exemplified by Absen's A25 Series LED display that consumes less than one kilowatt-hour per square metre daily. Entertainment lighting creates immersive experiences, such as Zhongyuan Innovation's dynamic backlight for gaming environments. Human-centric lighting prioritizes wellbeing, with products like Shenzhen Norming Lighting's dim-to-warm track lights.

The fairs also host forums to foster industry exchange. The Asian Lighting Forum at the Spring Lighting Fair, held April 20–21, explores immersive entertainment lighting and public space design. The Smart Lighting Solution Forum at the Smart Lighting Expo on April 21 discusses smart home lighting and supply chain ecosystems under the theme "Illuminating Smart Living: Infinite Possibility of Light." With strong support from Zhongshan City as a Special Partner City and pavilions from Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xiamen, and new regions like Changzhou Zouqu and Zhejiang, the twin fairs facilitate extensive industry exchange. As lighting evolves beyond basic illumination to integrate design, health, sustainability, and urban infrastructure, these events position Hong Kong at the forefront of a rapidly expanding global market.
