Hong Kong Watch Design Competition Winners Showcase Innovation and Market Potential
The 42nd Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition highlights innovative designs that break from tradition while demonstrating strong commercial viability, reinforcing Hong Kong's position as a creative hub in the global watch industry.

The 42nd Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition concluded as part of the recent watch fairs in Hong Kong, showcasing designs that challenge conventional watchmaking while demonstrating significant market potential. The competition, which received 116 entries across Open and Student categories, serves as a critical platform for promoting Hong Kong's watch industry domestically and internationally.
This year's Open Group theme "Memorable" produced several groundbreaking designs. The winning entry "FREEZE" by Tam Kwok Tung, sponsored by Wincy Horological Ltd, features an unconventional camera lens-inspired dial that breaks from traditional watch layouts. The design incorporates visible movement mechanics on the right window and gear-driven hands on the left, creating a unique aesthetic that merges horology with personal storytelling.
Other notable Open Group entries included "RB_ROBO" by Wong Ting Bong, which transforms watches into playful robot-inspired accessories, and "Backtrack" by Oro Time Limited, featuring swappable game cartridge elements that appeal to Y2K fashion trends. These designs demonstrate how Hong Kong designers are pushing boundaries beyond traditional watchmaking conventions.
The Student Group category, themed "Believe in Yourself," revealed emerging talent with strong commercial prospects. Winner Chan Tsz Ying from Hong Kong Design Institute created "Aspire," featuring moving beads that symbolize goal-chasing and reflection. This design also won the Made-to-Sell Award, judged by industry veterans who identified its strong market potential. The Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Limited and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Limited will put this award-winning design into production for sale at the HKTDC Design Gallery.
Other student entries included Lee Yuet Tung Eudora's "Believe in Yourself" watch featuring inspirational words on the outer ring, and Yip Yuen Sze Christine's "Broken Stars in the Ripples" design conveying messages of hope through ripple patterns and star-shaped hands. These designs reflect the competition's success in nurturing young talent while addressing contemporary themes relevant to modern consumers.
The competition's integration with major trade events like the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair at hkwatchfair.hktdc.com provides crucial exposure for winning designs to international buyers. This synergy between creative competition and commercial platform underscores Hong Kong's strategic approach to maintaining its position in the global watch industry through innovation and market-responsive design.
