HSR Backs ZWIA's Updated Zero Waste Hierarchy to Promote Sustainable Resource Management

The Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA) has released Version 8.1 of the Zero Waste Hierarchy, a pivotal framework for sustainable resource management, with significant contributions from Happy Stan’s Recycling Services Ltd. (HSR). This update introduces enhanced guidelines under the 'Do Not Export Harm' principle and a new 'Do No Harm' principle, aiming to minimize negative environmental and social impacts throughout materials' lifecycles.

Key revisions include updated definitions for terms such as 'circular economy', 'closed-loop systems', 'composting', and 'recycling', providing clearer language for global application. Jamie Kaminski, Chair of the ZWIA Zero Waste Hierarchy Working Group and President of HSR, emphasized the hierarchy's role in aligning policies with the concept of 'Zero Waste'.

Gary Liss, Chair of the ZWIA Certifications Committee, highlighted the updates' relevance to current challenges like chemical recycling and the transition to a circular economy. Richard Anthony, President of ZWIA, reiterated the hierarchy's importance as a model for resource conservation.

HSR's commitment to these updated standards underscores its dedication to responsible and ethical material handling. The full details of Version 8.1 are available here, offering a comprehensive guide for policymakers, businesses, and communities striving for sustainability.
