Jarrín Foundation and Los Defensores Award $50,000 in Scholarships to Latino Law and Journalism Students
The Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation and Los Defensores provided over $50,000 in scholarships to underserved Latino students pursuing law and journalism careers, addressing critical representation gaps in these fields.

The Jaime & Blanca Jarrín Foundation (JBJF), in partnership with Los Defensores, awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to underserved college students pursuing careers in law and journalism at the annual Wine Night at the Ravine fundraising gala held at Dodger Stadium. This initiative addresses the urgent need for Latino representation in newsrooms and courtrooms across the country, where diverse voices remain significantly underrepresented.
The event, themed "The Power of Believing," emphasized the importance of affirmation, mentorship, and cultural pride for Latino students who often face generational sacrifices while striving for educational and professional success. Proceeds from the gala directly fund scholarships and mentorship programs that empower students to reach their full potential. Since its inception, JBJF has raised over $225,000 in scholarship funds, demonstrating a sustained commitment to educational equity.
This year's scholarship recipients included seven students from institutions such as UC Berkeley, USC, and California State University Los Angeles, with awards ranging from $5,000 for undergraduates to $12,500 for graduate students. The financial support is part of a broader effort to break down barriers and tackle educational disparities that disproportionately affect Latino communities. Miriam Serrano, Vice President of Integrated Marketing and Community Relations at Los Defensores, highlighted the personal significance of this mission, noting her own experience as a first-generation college graduate and the transformative power of education.
The partnership between JBJF and Los Defensores, now in its sixth year, is strengthened by Los Defensores' Siempre Contigo initiative, which embodies the company's commitment to family-first values and Latino empowerment. Earlier this year, Los Defensores donated $20,000 to JBJF and World Central Kitchen to assist communities impacted by LA wildfires, further extending their community support efforts. The foundation, founded by legendary Dodgers broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, focuses on creating pathways for underserved students, with a growing alumni network and strong community partnerships building a legacy of empowerment.
Jaime Jarrín, MLB Hall of Fame broadcaster and JBJF co-founder, emphasized that the support extends beyond financial assistance, serving as a powerful message to youth that their dreams and stories matter. The event also honored six-time MLB All-Star Nomar Garciaparra and Dodgers photographer Jon Soohoo for their cultural and community contributions, reinforcing the importance of role models and representation in inspiring the next generation of leaders.
