La Posada Resident's 109th Birthday Highlights Importance of Community in Healthy Aging
Esther Whitley's celebration of her 109th birthday at La Posada demonstrates how strong community connections contribute to longevity and quality of life for older adults.

Esther Whitley, the oldest known resident in Palm Beach County, celebrated her 109th birthday at La Posada Senior Living community, highlighting the critical role social engagement plays in healthy aging. The milestone celebration brought together family, friends, and community members to honor Whitley's remarkable longevity and the values that have sustained her through more than a century of life.
Born in 1916 in Lake View, South Carolina, Whitley grew up on a 500-acre farm where she learned the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance that have guided her throughout her life. Her family lineage traces back to John Page, who emigrated from England in the late 1600s, establishing deep roots in community and family traditions that have clearly influenced her approach to life.
"I'm so thankful to see 109," said Whitley. "Every day is a blessing, and I'm grateful to be surrounded by so many kind people who make life so special. Life has taught me many valuable lessons—one being the importance of community—and that's exactly what I experience here at La Posada."
The celebration took on special significance when the Palm Beach Gardens Fire Department presented Whitley with 109 roses, recognizing her remarkable longevity and the joy she brings to those around her. This gesture underscored the broader community's appreciation for its oldest members and the wisdom they represent.
Brad Cadiere, Executive Director at La Posada, emphasized the importance of Whitley's milestone. "Esther is an inspiration to all of us at La Posada. We're so honored to celebrate this incredible milestone with her and her family. Her joy and resilience remind us why community is such an important part of healthy aging."
The event aligns with research from the National Institute on Aging showing that older adults who engage socially and maintain strong community connections tend to live longer, healthier lives. La Posada fosters this sense of belonging through resident-led programs, events, and daily activities that encourage connection and purpose, demonstrating a model for senior living communities nationwide.
Whitley's life journey includes marriage to Thomas E. Meyers in 1937, whose naval career took them from Charleston to New York and later Washington, D.C. Following his passing in 1973, she eventually moved to Florida, remarried, and joined the La Posada community 22 years ago. She raised two sons, Thomas and Richard, and one daughter, Rita, and is the proud grandmother of four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The celebration organized by La Posada's Life Enrichment team reflects the community's ongoing commitment to honoring residents' stories and life journeys. For more information about La Posada's approach to senior living, visit https://mylaposada.com/.
