Latino Families Leverage Short-Term Rentals for Wealth Building, Survey Finds

Latino families across the United States are increasingly turning to short-term rentals as a strategic method for wealth creation, according to a new survey conducted by the Hispanic Wealth Project in partnership with Airbnb. The "Building Wealth Through Investment Property Ownership Survey" found that more than 70% of Latino respondents view short-term renting as an effective way to earn extra income, with over half considering becoming hosts and nearly 15% already active in the sector.

The survey, which reached 1,276 Latino professionals in the real estate industry across 39 states and Puerto Rico, highlights that hosting is seen as a long-term wealth-building strategy. Among Latino hosts, more than 90% remain active, with half having hosted for three years or more. California has experienced a significant surge in Latino participation, with over 60% beginning to host in the past two years. The economic impact extends beyond individual households, as over 75% of respondents believe short-term rental platforms positively affect local economies, particularly during major events.

This trend aligns with the growing economic power of the U.S. Hispanic community, which reached a purchasing power of over $4.1 trillion in 2023, according to data from the Latino Donor Collaborative. The community's GDP has been growing more than twice as fast as the broader U.S. economy in recent years. Upcoming events like the FIFA World Cup are expected to further boost this activity, with over 60% of Florida respondents and 45% of California respondents considering hosting during the tournament. Airbnb anticipates 380,000 guests using its platform during the event, generating an estimated $210 million in host earnings.

The Hispanic Wealth Project aims to increase Latino investment property ownership by 25% by 2034, as outlined on their website. Strategic partnerships with platforms like Airbnb are central to this goal, focusing on educating and supporting Latinos interested in real estate investment. The survey underscores how Hispanic families are leveraging existing assets to build wealth, reflecting broader trends in economic empowerment and entrepreneurial spirit within the community.
