Los Angeles Homicides Hit Lowest Level Since 1966 as Peace Riders Mark 14 Years of Community Outreach

Los Angeles saw a historic drop in violent crime in 2025, recording 230 homicides—the lowest number since 1966. While officials cite multiple factors, community leaders highlight the 14-year mission of the Peace Riders, a grassroots coalition of motorcyclists, low-riders, car clubs and motorcycle clubs, as a significant contributor to the decline.

Each month, the Peace Riders travel through South Central Los Angeles neighborhoods, stopping to engage residents, distribute peace-focused educational materials and strengthen community bonds. In areas affected by recent violence, the group gathers with grieving families, offering prayers, comfort and support. They conclude their rides with community gatherings that include shared meals and festivals featuring live entertainment, which organizers call "edutainment"—combining education and entertainment to inspire positive choices.

"For many of the participants, this mission is deeply personal," said a Peace Riders representative. "Many have experienced the loss of loved ones through unnecessary violence and are determined to spread the idea of peace and love to others to help prevent future violence."

The Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International has supported the Peace Rides since their inception, providing funds and educational materials. Over the years, nearly 50,000 copies of The Way to Happiness booklet, written by L. Ron Hubbard, have been donated. Described as a common-sense guide to better living, the booklet promotes values that transcend cultural, religious and social differences, encouraging respect, responsibility and happier relationships. L. Ron Hubbard emphasized the importance of sharing these principles broadly, stating: "All you have to do is keep The Way to Happiness flowing in the society. Like gentle oil spread upon the raging sea, the calm will flow outward and outward."

The decline in homicides underscores the potential impact of sustained community outreach. The Peace Riders' approach—combining visibility, direct engagement and moral support—offers a model for grassroots crime prevention. As Los Angeles celebrates this milestone, the Peace Riders remain committed to their mission of bringing people together and creating a more peaceful future.
