Maryland Launches Free Cybersecurity Training Program for Government Employees Through EARN Grant

BCR Cyber has announced the launch of a Cybersecurity Operational Methods and Education Training cohort for Maryland state and local government employees, funded through the Maryland Department of Labor's Employment Advancement Right Now grant. The COMET program offers free cybersecurity expertise enhancement from September 29 through November 3, 2025, addressing the growing need for skilled professionals in an increasingly digital government infrastructure.

The program targets two distinct workforce segments with tailored training paths. Incumbent Training provides a 5-week foundational course covering Security Operations Fundamentals, Cyber Range Simulation, and Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence in the SOC. This new AI component introduces students to core concepts of AI and Machine Learning within Security Operations Centers context, reflecting the evolving nature of cyber threats. Live instruction occurs daily from 1 to 3 p.m., with part one beginning September 29, part two on October 20, and part three from October 27.

Advanced Incumbent Training offers intensive 5-week instruction focusing on network devices, security appliances, threat basics, applications, and networks, culminating in a CompTIA Security+ certification test voucher. This advanced track runs concurrently from September 29 through November 3 with daily live instruction from 3 to 5 p.m. Both programs require participants to be Maryland or local government employees with relevant experience and manager approval for training during business hours.

The initiative's importance lies in its direct addressal of cybersecurity workforce shortages within government sectors. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, the need for trained professionals capable of protecting critical infrastructure and sensitive public data intensifies. By providing government employees with access to specialized training at no cost, Maryland invests in strengthening its defensive capabilities against potential cyber attacks that could disrupt essential services or compromise citizen information.

This training program represents a strategic workforce development investment that could serve as a model for other states facing similar cybersecurity talent gaps. The inclusion of AI and machine learning components specifically addresses emerging threat vectors, ensuring participants gain relevant skills for contemporary security challenges. Applications for the program must be submitted by September 15, making this opportunity time-sensitive for eligible government employees seeking to enhance their cybersecurity qualifications.
