Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Buzzards Bay Coalition Enhance Education Through Maritime Heritage

The collaboration between Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) and the Buzzards Bay Coalition has brought a unique educational opportunity to New Bedford students, offering them a hands-on learning experience aboard the historic Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. This initiative, now in its second year, has successfully engaged 650 students from grades 3 to 12 in a series of 15 day trips that combine science, navigation, history, and Cape Verdean culture.

During these excursions, students participated in interactive learning stations led by a team of educators and the schooner’s crew. Activities included water quality testing, lessons in maritime navigation, and exploring the rich history of the Ernestina-Morrissey. The program not only educates but also inspires students to appreciate the maritime heritage and environmental stewardship of Buzzards Bay.

Mark Rasmussen, president of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, highlighted the excitement and engagement of the students, emphasizing the importance of connecting them with the local maritime culture and history. Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald of MMA underscored the academy’s commitment to experiential learning and community outreach, noting the program’s role in inspiring future generations.

The SSV Ernestina-Morrissey serves as a floating classroom, offering cadets and K-12 students alike the chance to learn about sail and leadership training, STEM subjects, and the importance of preserving maritime traditions. This partnership exemplifies how collaborative efforts can enrich education and foster a deeper connection with our cultural and environmental heritage.
