NFL's Justin Reid Champions CPR Education for Youth in Innovative Summer Program
NFL player Justin Reid is leveraging his platform to expand CPR education among youth through a summer program, aiming to double cardiac arrest survival rates by 2030 in collaboration with the American Heart Association.
More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside hospitals annually in the U.S., with most victims not receiving the necessary CPR to survive. Justin Reid, an NFL safety with the New Orleans Saints and founder of the JREID InDeed Foundation, is addressing this critical issue by integrating Hands-Only CPR training into his summer camp, Tackling Tech. This initiative is part of his role as an American Heart Association Nation of Lifesavers Player Ambassador, aiming to double cardiac arrest survival rates by 2030.
During National CPR and AED Week, Reid introduced 35 high school students to Hands-Only CPR, a method as effective as traditional CPR in the initial minutes of a cardiac emergency. The simplicity of calling 911 and performing chest compressions can save lives, emphasizing the importance of widespread CPR knowledge. Reid's challenge to the participants to creatively disseminate their CPR knowledge underscores the program's innovative approach to education.
The American Heart Association highlights the significance of CPR education, with nearly three-quarters of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happening at home. The association's CEO, Nancy Brown, praised Reid's efforts and the students' engagement as exemplary in expanding CPR awareness. The initiative not only educates but also empowers communities to act swiftly in emergencies, potentially saving countless lives.
