The New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) has significantly impacted the U.S. economy in 2024, funding 350 projects and creating over 61,000 jobs, with a focus on severely distressed communities and rural areas.

The New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) has proven to be a pivotal force in economic development across the United States in 2024, according to the latest NMTC Progress Report. With $8 billion allocated to 350 projects, the initiative has not only spurred job creation but also targeted investments in communities most in need, showcasing the program's efficiency and impact.
Highlighting the program's success, the report reveals that 61,125 jobs were generated, including 36,692 permanent full-time positions and 24,433 construction jobs. The federal cost per job stood at under $20,000, underscoring the program's cost-effectiveness. A significant portion of the financing, 81.3%, was directed towards severely distressed communities, with 30.1% benefiting non-metropolitan counties, illustrating the NMTC's commitment to addressing economic disparities.
Manufacturing and industrial sectors saw a record level of support, with 114 businesses receiving financing for equipment, working capital, and space renovations. This focus has notably benefited rural communities, creating nearly 35,000 manufacturing jobs since 2020. Additionally, the NMTC has played a crucial role in expanding access to healthcare and education, funding 75 healthcare projects and supporting the construction or renovation of 1,095 homes and rental units for low-to-moderate-income households.
The NMTC's ability to deliver capital to underserved areas has not only created jobs but also strengthened community assets, from healthcare facilities to educational institutions. With a track record of generating over one million jobs since its inception, the NMTC stands as a testament to the power of targeted federal programs in fostering economic growth and stability in communities across the nation.
