North America's Top Chief Sustainability Officers Honored Amid Challenging Business Climate
The Futur/io CSO Awards recognized outstanding sustainability leaders from major corporations during New York Climate Week, highlighting both progress and challenges in corporate sustainability reporting.

The winners of the Futur/io CSO Awards North America 25 were announced Monday night during a gala dinner at the newly opened vitra design showroom as part of New York Climate Week. Erik Hansen, Chief Sustainability Officer at Workday, received the Gold Award, while Jackie Jung of Western Digital earned Silver and Susan Uthayakumar of Prologis took Bronze.
The awards ceremony revealed important insights about the current state of corporate sustainability efforts. During three months of data collection and analysis, Futur/io and its partners recognized delays in sustainability reporting compared to 2024, with some companies even retracting earlier sustainability disclosures. The business climate can be characterized by geopolitical headwinds, economic pressures, and potential "greenhushing" - a trend where companies become less vocal about their environmental achievements.
Harald Neidhardt, CEO & Curator of the Futur/io Institute, emphasized the importance of recognizing sustainability leadership. "Our mission is to shine a light on the role of Chief Sustainability Officers, we hope to inspire others to be ambitious and work on building the desirable futures we want to live in," Neidhardt stated. "These years winners and 20 nominees are exemplary in their commitment towards keeping the pace needed to solve for the Sustainable Development Goals and higher ambition for NetZero."
The awards selection process involved rigorous criteria developed through collaboration with scientific partners. The winners were selected from a Top100 CSOs of North America 2025 list using a four-quadrant model criteria developed by Futur/io and scientific partner the Leonardo Centre on Business for Society at Imperial College Business School. The model considered corporate behavior maturity, regulatory performance on ESG and SDG criteria, net zero goals, environmental and human impact, along with self-assessment surveys.
Additional honorees included Special Honour awards for Annika Dubrall of Tiffany & Co. and Ann Tracy of Colgate-Palmolive. Ara Erickson of Weyerhaeuser received the Sustainable Supply Chain Award presented by Simon Jaehnig, Co-Founder & President of IntegrityNext Inc. The Peer Award, chosen by the live audience, went to Jennifer Motles of Philip Morris International.
The Grand Jury comprised influential sustainability voices including John Elkington, known as "the Godfather of Sustainability," Sandrine Dixson-Declève of the Club of Rome, and Michael Kobori, former Chief Sustainability Officer for Starbucks and 2024 Gold Award winner. The jury also included Niyanta Spelman, CEO of Rainforest Partnership, and Nina Eisenman, Vice President at NASDAQ.
This second edition of the CSO Awards North America represents an important benchmark for corporate sustainability leadership. The initiative by the Futur/io Institute, which describes itself as "a pioneering organisation dedicated to nurturing and inspiring leadership in sustainable innovation," comes at a critical time when sustainability reporting faces increased scrutiny and challenges. The awards program aims to maintain momentum toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals despite the current business environment pressures.
The event featured speakers including Sandrine Dixson-Declève of the Club of Rome, Magnus Drewelies of CEEZER Software, and Nina Eisenman of NASDAQ. The awards ceremony highlighted the growing importance of sustainability leadership in corporate America while acknowledging the complex challenges facing sustainability professionals in today's economic and geopolitical landscape.
