Olney Youth Sports Organizations Merge to Create Unified Athletic Program
The merger of OBGC and Sandy Spring Athletic Association will provide enhanced sports development opportunities and unified resources for youth athletes in the Olney region.
The Olney Boys and Girls Sports Association and Sandy Spring Athletic Association have announced a merger that will consolidate youth sports programs in the Olney, Maryland region. This strategic combination brings together two of the community's largest youth sports organizations under the OBGC banner, creating a unified athletic program for baseball, softball, lacrosse, and basketball.
The merger represents a significant shift in local youth sports infrastructure, ending years of competition between the organizations. All SSAA teams, players, and coaches will transition to the OBGC organization, creating a single cohesive sports community. The consolidation will enable shared access to field resources, training facilities, and developmental tools, providing enhanced opportunities for athletes of all age groups and skill levels.
John Kadi, baseball commissioner of Sandy Spring, emphasized the importance of this unification, stating that after 13 years, the organization is excited to unite the Olney youth sports community under the respected OBGC banner. The merger ensures that athletes will now play together as part of one strong organization rather than competing against each other in separate leagues.
Ben Corb, President of SSAA, highlighted the developmental benefits for area athletes, noting that players and families from both organizations will gain access to the finest sports facilities and amenities in Olney. The Sandy Spring Falcons, founded in 2012, have maintained a commitment to nurturing young athletes in a safe and supportive environment, while SSAA's roots date back to the 1950s with a rich legacy of fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.
Sean Davis, OBGC travel baseball commissioner, expressed enthusiasm about combining the talent of dedicated coaches, families, and players from both organizations. The merger is expected to welcome approximately 125 SSAA players to OBGC teams for the upcoming fall season, creating a more robust and competitive athletic community.
Brad Scott, Executive Director of OBGC, stated that the combination of coaching talent, commissioner expertise, and volunteer dedication will ensure that area children receive the best possible development in youth sports. The merger is set to begin immediately, with full operational integration expected by December 2025, marking a new chapter in Olney's youth sports landscape.
