Peru's Lord of Sipán Exhibition Highlights Ancient Mochica Culture at World Expo
Peru's pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai showcases the extraordinary Mochica civilization through an immersive exhibition featuring replicas of the Lord of Sipán's treasures, demonstrating the nation's rich cultural heritage and artistic legacy.

The Peru Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai has unveiled a captivating exhibition that brings the ancient Mochica civilization into the global spotlight. Titled "The Mochicas, Sovereigns of the Desert," the display offers international visitors an intimate glimpse into one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century—the tomb of the Lord of Sipán.
Meticulously crafted replicas of royal jewelry and ceremonial objects, created by skilled Lambayeque artisans, form the centerpiece of the exhibition. The display includes life-sized representations of Mochica rulers, featuring mannequins designed by artist Edilberto Mérida Pilares that capture the facial characteristics of modern-day descendants.
The exhibition represents a collaborative effort between PROMPERÚ and the Sipán Board of Trustees, aimed at preserving and promoting Peru's archaeological heritage. By showcasing intricate goldsmithing and cultural artifacts, the presentation bridges Peru's ancient past with its contemporary artistic traditions.
Time Out magazine has recognized the pavilion's significance, naming Peru among the top five international exhibitions at the expo. The display not only honors the Mochica civilization but also reinforces Peru's national identity on a global stage.
Under the theme "Infinite Possibilities," the exhibition demonstrates how cultural preservation and artistic innovation can intersect, offering visitors a profound understanding of Peru's historical richness and ongoing cultural dynamism.
