Rising Senior Homelessness in Florida Sparks Community Action

The alarming rise in senior homelessness across Florida, particularly in counties like Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee, has prompted urgent community and organizational responses. Gulfstream Goodwill Industries (GGI), known for its comprehensive homeless services, reports a 65% increase in seniors seeking emergency shelter from 2017 to 2022. This trend underscores a dire need for affordable housing and support services for the elderly.

Factors contributing to this crisis include a 36.7% surge in one-bedroom apartment rents since 2021, inadequate Supplemental Security Income benefits, and significant healthcare and mobility challenges. These issues have left many seniors, including veterans and former community contributors, without stable housing.

In response, Palm Beach County has initiated measures such as financial aid for at-risk seniors and the development of new housing solutions. GGI has further stepped up with its Out and About program, offering mobile outreach services to deliver food, connect seniors with essential services, and prevent homelessness before it starts. The organization emphasizes that aging with dignity is a right, not a privilege, calling for expanded affordable housing efforts to combat this heartbreaking trend.
