Shincheonji Church Challenges French Media's Reporting Practices

Shincheonji Church of Jesus in France has accused Le Parisien, a French daily newspaper, of publishing a misleading and sensationalistic article that misrepresents the religious organization's practices and values.

The church claims the April 7 article, headlined 'They Treated Us Like Animals,' severely damaged the organization's reputation by providing minimal context from the church's perspective. According to a church representative, their detailed written response to 12 journalist-submitted questions was reduced to merely two sentences, representing less than 1% of their complete statement.

Of particular concern to the church was the use of a photograph depicting a member with feet on a radiator, which the article portrayed as a form of punishment. The church adamantly denies this interpretation, stating the image was taken before the individual joined the organization and was merely a playful pose.

The church argues that such reporting can potentially stigmatize religious communities and infringe upon religious freedom and human rights. They are calling for more ethical media practices that provide balanced representation and respect diverse perspectives.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between religious organizations and media outlets regarding fair representation and the potential consequences of sensationalistic reporting.
