Skanska-FlatironDragados Joint Venture Secures $1 Billion Contract for Long Bridge North Project

The Skanska-FlatironDragados Joint Venture has been awarded a $1 billion contract by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) to construct the Long Bridge North Project, a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at expanding and modernizing rail services between Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia. This project represents the first phase of a larger effort to replace the aging two-track system with a four-track modern rail corridor, significantly improving freight and passenger rail capacity in the region.

The Long Bridge North Project will extend approximately one mile from East Potomac Park to Washington D.C.’s L’Enfant Interlocking. The eastern tracks will primarily serve CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSXT) freight rail, while the newly constructed western tracks will accommodate passenger services, including Amtrak Virginia, Amtrak’s long-distance service, and Virginia Railway Express (VRE). This upgrade is expected to alleviate current congestion and enhance the efficiency of rail transport in the area.

Michael Viggiano, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil, emphasized the project's readiness to proceed, highlighting the completion of funding, planning, and approvals. Jim Schneiderman, executive vice president of FlatironDragados, noted the collaborative efforts to optimize the project for minimal construction risk and greater schedule and cost certainty.

Construction is scheduled to commence in July 2025, with an anticipated completion by the fourth quarter of 2030. The project is a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including CSXT, Amtrak, VRE, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the National Park Service (NPS), and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
