South Shore Artist Launches Community Photography Project to Boost Children's Confidence
Photographer Isabella Ripley's 'Simply Me' exhibition pairs professional portraits with children's self-portraits to strengthen childhood identity and community connection through art.

The Frame Center Gallery in Hanover will host a special community photography exhibition celebrating childhood identity and confidence through artist Isabella Ripley's 'Simply Me' project. The exhibition, running from October 6 to November 3, features professional portraits of South Shore children aged 3 to 12 alongside their own self-portrait drawings, creating what Ripley describes as "an imaginative pairing that gives children the chance to see themselves as artists, superstars, and valued members of the community."
The project's significance lies in its approach to building self-worth through artistic expression. Ripley developed the concept from personal experience, explaining that during her parents' divorce, a single portrait of herself became a constant reminder of her importance. "That printed photograph became an anchor for me," she recalled. "Simply Me was born out of that experience the belief that a printed piece of artwork can help a child hold onto their confidence, even when life shifts around them."
The exhibition serves as more than just an art display, functioning as a community-building initiative that brings families and neighbors together to support local children. Ripley emphasized that the project "brings families, neighbors, and the community together to cheer on our kids and remind us of the importance of celebrating who they are right now." This community-focused approach represents a growing trend in using art as a tool for social connection and personal development.
A special evening event on October 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. will feature several interactive elements designed to make children feel celebrated. Highlights include a red carpet entrance, VIP tags for all participants, a child-friendly scavenger hunt, swag bags for families, and a raffle offering a chance to win a portrait session. The event aims to create a memorable experience that reinforces the project's confidence-building mission while providing light refreshments for attendees.
The Simply Me project demonstrates how community-based art initiatives can address broader social needs beyond aesthetic appreciation. By preserving childhood memories while simultaneously strengthening confidence, the exhibition offers a model for how artistic projects can serve dual purposes of documentation and personal development. The combination of professional photography with children's own artistic expressions creates a unique dialogue between how children see themselves and how they're seen by others, potentially influencing self-perception during formative years.
