Southland Development Authority Secures $100,000 Impact Grant for Economic Growth
The Southland Development Authority's receipt of a $100,000 Impact Grant from Nicor Illinois Community Investment marks a significant step towards fostering economic mobility and infrastructure development in the Southland region.

The Southland Development Authority (SDA) has been awarded a $100,000 Impact Grant by Nicor Illinois Community Investment (NICI), a move that underscores the importance of strategic funding in driving economic development and community growth. This grant, announced during a check-signing ceremony, is part of NICI's initiative to support nonprofits focused on creating long-term, meaningful change in areas such as economic mobility, small business development, and infrastructure.
SDA CEO Bo Kemp expressed gratitude for the grant, highlighting its potential to significantly advance the organization's mission to support businesses that are pivotal to the community's progress. Tovah McCord, NICI Executive Director, emphasized the organization's commitment to investing in entities like the SDA, which are making measurable impacts in strengthening communities and creating economic opportunities.
The grant is set to bolster the SDA's Monarch Fund, a innovative financing tool designed to spur business growth and prepare development-ready land across the Southland. With 260 acres currently under contract, the Monarch Fund aims to mirror the success of projects such as the CNI Pullman redevelopment, tailored to meet the unique needs of the Southland's communities and assets.
Collaboration with Nicor Gas, NICI's parent company, was also highlighted, particularly in efforts to power land for development, a strategy central to accelerating business and infrastructure growth in the region. The event saw participation from notable figures including State Representative Will Davis and University Park Mayor Joseph E. Roudez III, showcasing widespread support for the SDA's vision.
Further underscoring the regional impact of the SDA's work, Will Davis discussed Governors State University's plans for expansion, aligning with the SDA's efforts to enhance community livability and economic vitality. This grant not only represents a financial boost for the SDA but also a collective step towards realizing a more vibrant and inclusive economy in the Southland.
