Survey Highlights PostgreSQL's Role in Mitigating Cloud Outage Risks for Businesses
A new survey reveals the critical role of PostgreSQL in ensuring high availability and minimizing downtime for mission-critical applications, as businesses increasingly seek solutions to cloud outage concerns.

A recent survey commissioned by pgEdge, Inc., in partnership with The Foundry, sheds light on the growing reliance of businesses on PostgreSQL to safeguard against cloud service outages and ensure high availability for mission-critical applications. The findings underscore the database's capability to meet stringent uptime requirements, with 91% of organizations demanding no more than 4 minutes of downtime per month.
The survey, which targeted mid-to-senior IT leaders at SaaS companies and large enterprises, reveals a significant concern over cloud region failures, with 82% of respondents expressing at least some level of worry. This concern is driving robust demand for distributed or purpose-built high availability PostgreSQL solutions, with 79% of respondents either evaluating or considering such solutions in the next 12 months.
PostgreSQL's deployment across various stages and environments highlights its maturity and strategic importance. More than half of the respondents (51%) use PostgreSQL in a hybrid database environment, while 35% rely on it as the principal database for customer-facing applications. The survey also notes that 37% of IT leaders use PostgreSQL for mission-critical applications, further emphasizing its reliability and performance.
Despite the varied approaches to achieving high availability, the survey points to the acute need for resilient database architectures, as exceeding downtime thresholds can lead to delayed business operations, damage to brand trust, and other negative impacts. Conversely, the benefits of using high availability or distributed PostgreSQL solutions include increased uptime and cost savings compared to proprietary databases.
The survey respondents, primarily from the IT, Networking, and Security sectors, represent a wide range of company sizes and industries, indicating a universal need for effective high availability strategies. Phillip Merrick, Co-founder and CEO of pgEdge, commented on the findings, stating, "IT leaders are increasingly concerned with downtime for mission-critical applications and the risks of cloud region failure impacting their business."
