UGI Utilities Launches Extensive Gas Main Replacement Project in Allentown
UGI Utilities is undertaking two significant gas main replacement projects in Allentown, impacting multiple streets and potentially offering local residents and businesses an opportunity to convert to natural gas. The infrastructure upgrades aim to enhance service reliability and safety.

UGI Utilities, Inc. will commence comprehensive system upgrades in Allentown, targeting critical infrastructure improvements across multiple city streets. The projects, scheduled from May to September, represent a significant investment in municipal gas infrastructure and service reliability.
The first phase, beginning May 2, will focus on East Elm Street, South Bradford Street, and East Fairview Street. A second project starting May 5 will target Lehigh Street, Keck Street, and West Tioga Street. Construction will occur Monday through Friday between 7 am and 5 pm, with potential disruptions to traffic and local access.
These infrastructure upgrades carry substantial implications for the community. By replacing aging gas mains, UGI is proactively addressing potential safety concerns and modernizing the city's natural gas distribution network. The project presents an additional opportunity for local homes and businesses along the project routes to convert to natural gas service.
Residents and businesses should anticipate road closures, detours, and potential parking restrictions during construction hours. UGI warns that some temporary interruptions to natural gas service are inevitable, requiring property access for equipment inspection and relighting.
Weather and working conditions may influence project timelines, with final paving and restoration potentially extending several weeks beyond initial construction. The comprehensive upgrade demonstrates UGI's commitment to maintaining safe, reliable utility infrastructure for its nearly 760,000 customers.
