UGI Utilities Warns Customers of Escalating Scam Attempts Targeting Service Payments

UGI Utilities, Inc. has reported another attempted scam targeting customers, where fraudsters tried to convince a homeowner to pay $1,350 for a natural gas service line installation that is provided free of charge. The customer contacted a phone number found online that was not associated with UGI, and after extensive questioning, the scammer sent an email requesting payment. Fortunately, the customer recognized the fraud and reported it to UGI using the legitimate contact number.

This incident follows a recent warning from UGI about scammers creating sponsored online ads that appear in search results when customers look for the company's phone number. These ads, which do not mention UGI but contain fraudulent contact information, are part of a broader trend identified by the Federal Trade Commission. Scammers are increasingly using online platforms, including social media, to deceive consumers into calling fake numbers.

Dan Adamo, UGI Vice President of Customer Relations, emphasized that customers should only use the official phone number, 800-276-2722, for any account inquiries, bill payments, or gas leak reports. UGI ensures this number is prominently displayed on their customer portal and official website at https://www.ugi.com, but scammers continue to find new methods to mislead the public.

In addition to phone scams, UGI advises vigilance against door-to-door imposters posing as utility workers. Legitimate UGI employees carry photo identification, wear uniforms with the company logo, and drive marked vehicles. Customers should verify any suspicious visits by calling the official UGI number before allowing access to their homes. UGI Utilities, serving over 760,000 customers, remains committed to protecting consumers from these deceptive practices through ongoing education and alerts.
