UNCF Chicago's 25th Annual Gala Raises Over $1 Million for Student Scholarships
The United Negro College Fund's Chicago chapter celebrated a significant milestone by raising over $1 million at its 25th annual gala, supporting scholarships for students in Illinois and beyond.

The United Negro College Fund's (UNCF) Chicago chapter marked a significant achievement at its 25th Annual 'A Mind Is…' Gala, raising $1,005,600 to support scholarships for students. The event, held at The Geraghty, brought together over 500 guests, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who delivered welcome remarks. The gala's success underscores the community's commitment to ensuring students have the resources to enter and graduate from college.
Lisa Rollins, UNCF Regional Development Director, highlighted the importance of the funds raised, stating, 'This remarkable achievement will help us continue to provide essential support for the students we serve.' The evening also honored Ariel Investments with the 'A Mind Is…' Corporate Award and Nadia Rawlinson, Co-owner and Operating Chair of The Chicago Sky, with the 'A Mind Is…' Trailblazer Award, recognizing their dedication to education.
A live auction, led by auctioneer Gee Scott, featured exclusive travel packages, with proceeds going towards college scholarships. The event also featured performances by the R&B group After 7, adding a musical highlight to the evening. From 2022 to 2023, UNCF awarded 541 college scholarships to students in Illinois, demonstrating the tangible impact of such fundraisers.
Gala Chair Sherina Edwards, an alumna of Howard University and Spelman College, emphasized the importance of community support in light of recent cuts to education funding. 'We must work harder, dig deeper in our pockets to help the next generation of young people to get to college, to have resources while in college, and to graduate,' Edwards remarked. The gala not only celebrated a milestone but also reinforced the ongoing need for investment in education to empower future generations.
