Zillow Launches AI-Powered Virtual Staging to Transform Home Shopping Experience

Zillow has launched Virtual Staging, an AI-powered feature integrated directly into Zillow Showcase, the company's premium listing experience. This innovation enables home shoppers viewing listing photos to tap a button, select from curated design styles, and see select rooms fully staged in real time. Amanda Pendleton, Zillow's home trends expert, emphasized that "buying a home is an emotional decision as much as a financial one," noting that many buyers overlook potential homes because they cannot visualize beyond existing furniture or design choices.

The technology works through a Virtual Staging icon that appears on select featured room photos in Showcase listings. Buyers can choose from various design styles including modern, Scandinavian, industrial, midcentury, luxury, coastal, and farmhouse. The AI can restyle spaces whether the room is empty or already furnished, and users can refresh furniture arrangements within the same style for fresh inspiration. Shoppers can also remove furniture entirely to see the home as a blank slate.

For agents and sellers, Virtual Staging represents a significant competitive advantage in today's market. According to Zillow's 2024 Consumer Housing Trends Report, 71% of sellers are more likely to hire an agent who uses interactive media such as virtual tours or floor plans. The impact is amplified when combined with Showcase, as agents using Showcase on most listings already win 30% more listings than non-Showcase agents, with Showcase listings selling for $7,000 more on average.

This feature marks the first major integration of technology from Virtual Staging AI (VSAI), following Zillow's October 2024 acquisition of the company. Josh Weisberg, senior vice president of AI at Zillow, stated that "Virtual Staging applies the AI field of computer vision to restyle listing photos in real time to help shoppers see a home's potential and give agents a time-saving way to stand out." The same technology has been available to real estate photographers and media companies through Aryeo since March at no extra cost to subscribers.

The integration reflects Zillow's broader AI vision to personalize experiences for buyers and sellers, make processes effortless for agents, and fully integrate AI into Showcase. By embedding this technology directly into consumer-facing platforms, Zillow creates a seamless, visual way for buyers to explore homes while providing agents with powerful, time-saving marketing tools that enhance listing presentations and drive better outcomes in competitive real estate markets.
